About The Artwork

Chestnut Tree. 30.4 x 22.6 cm. Gouache and watercolor on paper. Thea McPherson 2023. A plein air painting from the artist's own garden in Denmark in late summer. On the left is the old chestnut tree, in the middle background the kiwi, and to the right in the sun is the plane tree. Light loose strokes capture the late afternoon sun and many smaller plants such as purple thistle. A painting with many small details and bold colors. The red ochre tree trunks contrast nicely with the green viridian of the chestnut leaves and leads the eye into the deep purple shadows at the center.

Thea McPherson is a professional artist living on a small island in Southern Denmark. She works primarily in watercolor and gouache on paper. Her subject matter focuses on the natural world, especially her garden and the landscapes around her. She enjoys looking for patterns in nature and painting the small details. Thea is originally from the San Francisco Bay Area in California and has lived all over the world. Most recently she spent time in sunny Portugal painting vibrant tropical and succulent plants. She now calls Denmark home and is working on bringing some of the loose expressiveness and experimentation with color that she found in Portugal to the very different Danish flora and color palette she sees around her. Thea's dreamy landscapes are meant to invoke joy and peace. She uses artmaking as a way to notice the beauty around her.
