About The Artwork
original oil painting on canvas This painting is about unity within a family or group of people. This idea of togetherness is echoed by the juxtaposition of the solid frontal structure of the composition, the way the figures seem meshed together by the brushstrokes and the movement and instability of the layered marks of the ground. Taking as my source imagery anonymous found photographs, I am interested in the alchemical process of how meaning is altered when an image is re-contextualized and translated to paint. The images show representations of people but they are not painted as portraits, rather as metaphors for the memory of a feeling.
