During my time in Mexico I observed with delight how the plaza-this central public space lies at the heart of the community from ancient Mesoamerican times until the present. They really are communal living rooms. This painting arose out of my observations of the Plaza I frequented both from above, as i had a view over it, and from within. I began this work by sketching the Plaza by memory. Recalling its architecture, streets, paths, rooftops and of course colours! However the sketching wasn't done with a pencil but with tape on canvas. I used transparent tape to delineate the streets, spaces, lines and forms. I then spray painted over the tape. When the tape was removed the white spaces revealed the forms my intuitive memory processed. This was like working in reverse, as in negative space and it really challenged the strategic part of my brain a lot. Never knowing yet trusting a long and ardous yet intuitive memory process. This painting was a labour of love, and one of my most memorable happy painting experience. We remember with our whole being. A momoztli is a prehispanic structure of Mesoamerica placed in front of temples as placeholders for sacred offerings.

Monica Figueredo is a multidisciplinary artist with a B.A in Fine Arts from OCAD University in Toronto, Canada. She has exhibited globally in a variety of media ranging from painting, sculpture, installation and documentary filmmaking. Her multi-ethnic upbringing and her practice as a journey woman, as the peripatetic who maps an alternate world by her journey through it, has exposed her to multitude of cultures, faiths and cosmological knowledge. All of which play a key intuitive role in her creative process through the language of abstraction. The reconciliation of found objects, recycled fabrics and painted canvases made at different times are brought together, offering unexpected encounters and territories of present and future personal mythologies.
