The Gallic rooster is the unofficial national symbol of France as a nation. The association with the rooster may simply stem from the similarity of the Latin words for rooster (gallus) and the inhabitants of Gaul (gallicus), now known as France. This pun was known back in Roman times, when many Gauls used roosters to symbolize their loyalty to Gaul. The ancient Greeks believed that the rooster greeted the Sun every morning with a hearty cry, symbolizing victory during the night. As such it was considered a solar emblem and associated with the gods and goddesses of the Sun, Zeus, Apollo, Leto and Artemis.
