About The Artwork

Before Dusk, Death Valley 2016. I spent the summer of 2016 in Los Angeles, California and made a weekend trip with friends to Death Valley. We stayed at Furnace Creek Inn, I was at times delirious from the heat, even at night, but I remember the relief when sun bode us farewell and we welcomed nightfall. This portrait was taken just before dusk, when the sand had cooled down enough to sit on. Death Valley is a place of extremes. In the blistering heat, with barely any sign of life, one is quickly reminded of their own mortality. And yet, in this harsh and unforgiving landscape, there is a strange sense of healing that takes place. For me, being in Death Valley was like being put through an emotional crucible - it stripped away all the extraneous layers and brought me face to face with my own vulnerabilities. It made me confront my fears and my limitations, and in doing so, it helped me to find a sense of clarity and purpose. In this photograph, I've tried to capture the sense of stillness that I felt while I was there. The way the light seemed to shimmer and dance across the sand, the way the rocks jutted up from the ground like ancient monuments, the way the horizon stretched out into an infinite emptiness - all of it was both beautiful and breathtakingly humbling. The artwork comes to you in a tube as a Giclée pigment print on Hahnemühle Fine Art Baryta 325gsm archival paper. It a heavy weight fine art paper with a subtle gloss, ideal for prints with deep blacks that are rich and high in contrast. Edition of 30 + 3 AP Unframed Image size is 40cm x 60.6cm Print size is 50cm x 70.6cm as it includes a white border of 5cm on each side for easy framing.
