Inspired by butoh - the Japanese avant-garde dance form - the form takes on a mysterious shape which ultimately resolves in a harmonic asymmetrical balance both visually and structurally. The main body consists of smooth contours and form while the extending piece possesses some flatter surfaces in order to provide the whole form with an aesthetic interplay between the parts. The structure not only suggests human qualities but also a landscape - a bumpy terrain or mountain range. Port orford cedar is a close cousin of Japanese hinoki wood which is known for its mold resistance and wonderful lemony aroma. It is used commonly for bathtubs and washroom applications in Japan where the scent can be enjoyed. This sculpture is left untreated and can be enjoyed by smelling as well as touching and seeing. I hope the viewer can interpret the forms in their own personal way and allows it to affect them. I come upon these forms as a result of inquiry into human nature just like butoh dancers must contact their true nature in order to fuel the dance with deep penetrating energy.
