The third in the "Opportunity" series where I am exploring the pierced sculpture, "No.3" offers a new application of the hole. This time the hole has more depth and is somewhat tunnel-like. This adds more mystery to the opening because traversing through the tunnel involves a spatial experience on the inside. The tripodal structure with which this organic form takes shape brings a sense of groundedness to the piece. Free standing, the form has integrity of it's own which brings forth a feeling of character and charm. I can't help but relate to the form with its somewhat personified design. At the same time I wanted it to embody a quality of mystery and intrigue. I carve these sculptures as visual poems where the elementary curves, contours and masses are the words. I wish to portray the beauty of the chosen wood and the subtle and pure forms. I attempt to rid the forms of extravagance so that the essence can be brought forth as the focus and fuel of the aesthetics. The untreated Western Red Cedar is soft and light to the touch which marries the themes of transience and openness. The aroma adds to the experience when holding and feeling the form in your hands. I think these forms bring a sense of tranquility and presence to the interior where they are placed. I am reminded of the alcove or "tokonoma" of traditional Japanese interior design where a few special objects are placed and their form is visually amplified due to the minimalism.
