Hinoki wood is a pleasure to carve - it gives off a lemony scent as it's chipped off. This is maybe the essence of my tripodal concept as it is the most minimalist of the series so far. I have been exploring this tripodal structure in my line of biomorphic forms. The biomorphic forms are an expression of an inquiry into metaphysical and truth seeking issues such as psychological time, perception/reality, parts/whole. The tripod form allows me to push this basic balancing mechanism to its limits and serves as a structure within which I can layout the metaphysical concepts. As I was finishing this sculpture, I realized I should take it to a high polish. The soft wood of the hinoki (Japanese cypress) is impressed easily so care must be taken when sanding to avoid damaging other areas in the process. Also, sanding out the previous grit is a very long process because of the nature of the wood. Taking it to 600 grit without any scratches left behind is almost purifying for me as it takes long hours of focused concentration and care. As I sand, the mind's thoughts play in the background and can be watched like a movie - which becomes quite refreshing as personal faults/flaws, misunderstandings, etc. are spotted and thereby extinguished. I finished the sculpture with beeswax and polished it with a cotton cloth by hand. Now it is super smooth to the touch. I absolutely love it. It will serve as an inspiration for more of it's kind to be made next. Perhaps this is a milestone piece for me.
