Lacquer paintings are an ancient art in China. It uses egg shells, seashells and metallic powder to create artwork. It has the characteristic of creativity, individuality, fire proof and water proof while looking as new as ever. Traditional lacquer paintings are usually with ornamental design. Chen has more than ten years of making lacquer paintings. As early as 1986, he experimented with a new style of lacquer painting. Chen created a brand new style of lacquer paintings which were based on the traditional method of lacquer painting by sketching, brushing, spray painting, polishing, coating with multi layers of lacquer and gluing with eggshells together with Western style of oil paintings which stresses the use of light, space and layers. Not only did Chen receive recognition from the lacquer painters in China at that time, his artwork became very popular among tourists from Europe, America and Asia who were showed great interest in purchasing and collecting. The tourists called Chen’s lacquer paintings “Magic Paintings”.
