"The human ego can be exalted to experience godlike attributes, but only at the cost of over-reaching itself and falling to disaster. This is the meaning of the story of Icarus, the youth who is carried up to heaven on his fragile, humanly contrived wings but who flies too close to the sun and plunges to his doom." (CARL JUNG) This diptych was created using the sea views I looked on when I lived in South Africa, on Laxey Beach on the Isle of Man, and here on some of the British Columbian beaches. I then framed them in an old, decontaminated, weathered window salvaged from a Pioneer's cabin in the Canadian wilderness. I used items which I have been collecting for a long time; shells, gulls feathers, beach sand, pebbles, driftwood and bark from a tree to represent a rock. The sky and cloud were painted with pastel and the ocean and beach had an undercoat of acrylic. Acrylic and acrylic ink were used to highlight the beach sand and shadows. Separately these 2 artworks were named "Icarus Flying" and "Icarus Dying".

I was born in South Africa and then studied for at Rhodes University under professor Brian Bradshaw. I lived in Northwestern British Columbia, Canada for 9 years. and during that time opened an art gallery (with gift shop), and a working studio where I painted and taught people to do the same. Although being a landscape painter using pastel has been a lifelong love, I now explore other media in an effort to express my strong thoughts and emotions\ . This has been a voyage of discovery where I have found new dimensions I was only able to dream of in the past. Please note that ALL of my images (C.N.
