I make abstract paintings with paper. My work overall examines and explores aspects of ephemerality, ethereality, and unpredictability as it relates to human experience. In creating this series called “Night Stream” and this piece, I was inspired by the mercurial, tenuous, and ethereal nature of the nighttime. Just as in the nocturnal world where deep dreams and evocative transience flow through the air, this piece streams in and out of our subconscious mind; and it navigates through fragments of our experiences and memories. In the process of creating the work, several layers of paper were glued together then the very layers were sanded and peeled to reveal new layers underneath. As in my other series, throughout this series, I celebrate tenuous, mysterious, and delicate beauty of life through limning universal human experience of precarious impermanence and its ironic exchangeability with life onto a canvas by performing the acts of building, annihilating, and eventually, birthing and revealing anew.

Young makes abstract paintings with paper. At the core of her practice, she explores the concept of impermanence as it relates to life, and the beauty of such mercuriality and unpredictability embedded in the life form. Techniques and process are key to expressing her intention as she unearths the essence of the theme of ephemerality by peeling away colored paper that was first meticulously layered and copiously built up. She is inspired by this process of building and removing intricate layers in order to reveal what is underneath and between – birthing something entire new from the ashes of destruction. In her body of work, melding her past experiences and passion together, Young combines elements from art, design, and craft. Young received her BA in Philosophy from Occidental College, and post graduate studies in Fashion Design from Parsons School of Design. Her paintings have been exhibited and placed by galleries and collectors throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. She currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
