World Plates Collage

This set of works was created in my home studio using ephemera that has existed and travelled alongside me and lived a life of its own, the physical frames becoming a catalyst for the creative process. The frames are sourced from various locations and often already contain an image. Inherent properties are considered such as scale, form, weight and the potential for customisation, whilst the existing images are partially retained, obscured elaborated on or re-crafted in order to provide unique, original, exotic or unfamiliar combinations. Within this process I work to select a combination of elements that can be fused together in their new spatial environment. The search for an overall visual balance drives the selection process via a set of in-action design decisions. At times I have direct control over the materials, but just as often, by virtue of chance arrangements, the materials have the power to dictate the direction that a piece may take. My on-going interest in this set of working processes sees me embracing these playful narratives that naturally occur and can become integral to the composition. These works represent creative freedom in that they are self initiated and are not deadline dependent. They present an opportunity to loosen up, investigate materials, to be fearless and to develop abstract notions within layout design.
