About The Artwork

If there is one model I hope to draw again someday, it is the dancer, Soa. This was from the first of two sessions we had with her. Her petite yet incredibly strong physique coupled with striking facial features and some of the best and varied poses I have seen, made for an extremely productive session. Here, Soa is very low to the surface, the torso bent over forwards with arms outstretched in front and slightly and gracefully crossed over, her right leg stretched out in a gorgeous curved form with the foot flat on the surface and the left leg tucked back in under the torso. The overall silhouette is delightfully asymmetrical with sufficient negative space to read the pose. This drawing is from the first session where I started to experiment with gouache. A new medium coupled with a fantastic model made these two hours a delight. This, being a five minute pose, I used one thick brush on white paper, and though it was quick, I made sure to incorporate the shadows using a dry brush effect for the face, and harsh, solid black drop shadows underneath the torso - shadows are a great way to separate elements to see the different forms clearly, as demonstrated with the arms bathed in light sitting in front of the leg and torso in shadow, and the head in soft shadow sitting between the arms and in front of the darkness of the body. Even in a five minute pose I find it extremely important to include some indication of facial features and with her shaved head, Soa made it easy to not get lost in details, but even in the hair we find rhythms and changes of direction with the brush strokes. It was done at the Wednesday evening Life Drawing sessions held at Illumination Mac Guff, Paris, where I worked as a Character Animator for over three and a half years. The studio is known for such films as Despicable Me, Minions, The Secret Life of Pets and The Lorax. The original piece has already been acquired but prints are still available. All of my figure drawings are from life - no photos were used at any point in their fabrication. The model is in front of you and you have a definite amount of time to get down as much information as you can or see fit. Because of this, each drawing is truly unique and a complete one of a kind, containing a spontaneity that can never be duplicated through photo inspired drawings/paintings. Please continue to look through my work for more images of Soa, quick and long poses.

English/French Character Animator that has worked on animated feature films, 'Nimona', 'Missing Link', 'The Secret Life of Pets', 'Minions', and many more over the last 16 years. Figure/Life Drawing is my passion and as well as being something I take great pleasure in doing, also has a very beneficial impact on my professional work in terms of anatomy, weight, movement and posing. When drawing the human figure I love using shadow to create volume and depth, I love trying to capture the weight and movement in an anatomically correct and yet loose manner, and above all, I love finding little attentions to detail that capture the essence of the model, especially around the face. I have lived across 3 different European countries and the US, and am now living in London, UK.
