About The Artwork

Xavier is a Parisian based model who participates at numerous drawing classes at schools and ateliers, like Les Beaux Arts or La Grande Chaumière. He has a very strong physique and his poses are reminiscent of a Renaissance style figure - powerful but at the same time graceful. His pose is very much 'active' - all body parts are in use - his right arm supporting his leaning torso, the left arm raised in the air holding a pole, and his legs spread apart. The activeness is what brings out the muscle definition and in this case, I hope my attention to these details gives the viewer the sensation of weight and tension. I chose to approach this 10 minute pose with black gouache on textured, brown craft paper (the reverse side is smooth), using a thick brush to make my bold, broad marks to mirror the strong bold muscular forms. Varying the amount of paint applied, I have areas of thick, dense tone where the brush was heavily laden for the dark and more active areas, and areas of soft tone, achieved using a dry brush effect, for the general shadows cast. I love playing with light to create volume and here was a prime opportunity with a muscular back and light source from above. It was done at the Wednesday evening Life Drawing sessions held at Illumination Mac Guff, Paris, where I worked as a Character Animator for over three and a half years. The studio is known for such films as Despicable Me, Minions, The Secret Life of Pets and The Lorax. All of my figure drawings are from life - no photos were used at any point in their fabrication. The model is in front of you and you have a definite amount of time to get down as much information as you can or see fit. Because of this, each drawing is truly unique and a complete one of a kind, containing a spontaneity that can never be duplicated through photo inspired drawings/paintings. Shipping & Returns

English/French Character Animator that has worked on animated feature films, 'Nimona', 'Missing Link', 'The Secret Life of Pets', 'Minions', and many more over the last 16 years. Figure/Life Drawing is my passion and as well as being something I take great pleasure in doing, also has a very beneficial impact on my professional work in terms of anatomy, weight, movement and posing. When drawing the human figure I love using shadow to create volume and depth, I love trying to capture the weight and movement in an anatomically correct and yet loose manner, and above all, I love finding little attentions to detail that capture the essence of the model, especially around the face. I have lived across 3 different European countries and the US, and am now living in London, UK.
