About The Artwork

This painting is on a gallery wrapped canvas. The sides are painted charcoal grey. I live near a lovely wetlands area that I frequent daily on walks with my Australian cattle dog. Though every season has it's own distinct flavor in the wetlands I do favor the Fall, when the leaves are colored and falling and the stark white branches stand out against the charcoal sky. Often times I would marvel at the large flocks of crows that would gather at the edge of the forest. Crows seem a metaphor for change, transition or loss. They seem to carry with them a general sense of foreboding. In imagining the scene for this painting, I wanted to translate this sense of ominous mystery along with the quiet beauty and stillness of the place itself.

Shannon Rose Merrigan is a local artist born and raised in the Portland area. She is finishing her Bachelors in Art Practices Degree at Portland State University, scheduled to graduate in the Fall of 2017. Consistently intrigued in the contemplation of the individual and their relationship and connection to humanity and nature as a whole; Merrigan’s concepts stem from her personal interpretation of nature and her emotional and intellectual responses to her experience. Drawing and painting for over twenty years, she has an extensive collection of work and several of her pieces are in private collections in the Portland Metropolitan area. Merrigan participated in two group shows in 2016; a show called 50 Works at Portland State University’s MK Gallery, and at the 35th Annual Gender Studies Symposium at Lewis and Clark College. Her paintings have also been published in two issues of Pathos Literary Magazine in 2016 as well. Currently she resides in Tigard Oregon with her husband and two children.
