About The Artwork

Years of personal observation of others in bars and nightclubs inspired the artist to create "Barfly". Although the woman as depicted appears to exude an air of confidence and a haughty surety of self with her defiantly raised chin and her slim cigarette held aloft almost as a kind of barrier, there is nevertheless a palpable feeling of loneliness and sadness present in her. The loud steady pounding beat of the music, the pulsating neon lights and the smoke that permeates every dark surface in the bar surrounds and nearly envelops her. And yet she, for all appearances, appears to be comfortably at home. She seems determined to not be seen as an alien presence in what seems to amount to a oddly familiar, yet, chaotic world. In any case, she's hell-bent on making it clear that she's fair game; that she is yes, open to all manner of would-be predators and like-minded souls. This work is a dry brush acrylic work presented on a recycled wooden frame. The artist hopes viewers will feel the stark reality of an wholly artificial event. The artwork is thus not so much based on the perception of reality as it is an visual introspective study of a fleeting moment lost in time.

My artwork, I believe, is just part of an endless learning process that moves me one more step toward successfully rendering my own unique and personal vision of the world. I have been on this planet for quite awhile; some seventy-odd years, in fact. I was born and raised in the Dallas, Texas area and I live in Mesquite, Texas, a large suburb of the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metro-plex. I hold two degrees from a New York University; one of them a Masters degree. I previously also completed graduate work in Ethics and Conflict Resolution at Southern Methodist University. By profession, for over forty years I was at one time or another, an accountant, a CFO, and a financial analyst prior to my early retirement in 2009. Most of those years were spent in the petroleum and banking industries. Some would likely call me a late bloomer because both of my degrees didn't come along until I was well into my forties and fifties. I have been interested in photography all my life, but I didn't really discover the art world and become an avid participant until about ten or twelve years ago. That said, my interests are rather wide-ranging. I write and have published poetry, articles, essays and novels. I am an amateur radio operator, I play several musical instruments, my favorite being the piano, and finally, my wife and I own two gorgeous convertibles that are more than ready for participation in all the local car shows. My artwork and my photography is held in a number of private collections throughout the world. I have experimented with abstract sculpture and painting and multi-media work, but find that I generally prefer drawing. My favorite subject is studies of the human face; with an appreciative focus on all things feminine. I'm quite content to share my art with those who appreciate my work for whatever it might mean to them. I can't think of any awards or prizes I've won for my artwork, but I have to say I'm not all that interested in competition, but I am more interested in producing art that means something to me and suits my tastes and goals. In short, I feel I am a man who has lived long enough and has experienced enough of the world to truly appreciate the incredible beauty of our world and what it offers us. In particular, I also appreciate being given the opportunity to record the human spirit as I personally see it and to thereby create my own personal impressions of some of the interesting people who inhabit it.
