'Carnivalhead001' Oil, acrylic, sticker, marker pen, sand texture gel, spray on linen in three parts, 259 x 582 cm, 2021 The Carnival Head series depicts a festive death. Mask festivals from the past and Halloween costumes of today have lost their mythical origins or religiousness and transformed into a secular meaning. Exposing ‘otherness’ in the festival goes beyond simply covering up the original figure and entering a world of another dimension. The Carnival Head series deconstructively reveals the unrestrained desires and fragmented and disordered lives of contemporaries, while at the same time mixing myths and legends in masks and costumes, imitation of animals, and codes of all kinds of popular culture to create a diverse group of characters. As if the origin of the figure is a ghost, the figures in the picture are dismantled, but they are combined in a material way and exist neither dead nor alive. All three series started with the theme of 'death', but the Carnival Head series is a story about the unfinished present. Therefore, rather than the appearance of a painting that seems to be eternal and perfect, it pursues a state of painting that is more drawing, free, and arbitrary, in which the word 'completion' is insignificant.

South Korea
Artist Wonmi Seo describes her painting practice as the formation of disassembly. Based in Seoul, South Korea, her studio sees collage, drawing and painting practices regularly combined into one, creating artworks both inspired by and in reaction to traditional painting practices throughout history. Exploring the overarching theme of death, Wonmi deftly articulates tenebrism and tactual methodologies to execute artworks that are beautiful conceptually as well as superficially. Wonmi received her BFA in Painting from Sungkungkwan University, South Korea. She has won several awards for her work including the SDU Art Prize in 2018, and a Creative Support Scholarship from the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture. She has exhibited her works in group shows across Seoul, and had her first solo exhibition at Artspace Boan1942 in 2017.
