In this piece, I was aiming to achieve through color what William Blake achieved through line and contour in his prints: what the scholar Stephen Leo Carr calls "non-tyrannical coherence." In Blake's prints, there is no clear foreground or background, defying clear hierarchies while holding together as a whole. It is also difficult to tell if lines are moving toward or away from you, allowing the prints to create fascinating optical illusions. By using a range of materials, varying my mark making, and creating complex relationships of color and saturation, I sought to create a similarly dynamic painting here.

My goal is to create work that speaks across genres and traditions. My training in painting was in classical realism, but I work mostly in abstraction and surrealism. Regardless of genre, I balance representation with emotional communication. To me, the best paintings move their viewers without sacrificing technical proficiency, no matter how abstract or representational. You can find more of my work at www.slreichman.com.
