This is an original painting, 18" x 24" acrylic and fabric on panel. The sides of this piece are wood that's been sanded and waxed, so the piece can be hung without a frame. This piece ended up being many layers, some of which I sanded through to reveal the beautiful texture underneath (thus the title). I often come back to the hexagon pattern - in this painting they remind me of faceted jewels. This series, “Pattern Seeking”, is about optimism in the face of evidence to the contrary. In an increasingly chaotic and uncertain time, I paint to evoke positive emotions, even if I’m not always feeling them myself. The repeating textile patterns that serve as my inspiration are meditative and soothing in their regularity, a reminder of threads winding through history and my tiny place in the world. Striving to create a harmonious whole and a beautiful finished object, putting down colors and patterns that interact with and weave into each other in a satisfying way - this all affects me for the better, as I hope it affects the viewer.

A love of structure led me to study architecture in school, which fueled a fascination with how people choose to decorate the spaces around them. I indiscriminately love pattern and color - if it’s decorated and brightly colored, I’m attracted to it. I adore the handmade and the accidental, and have a fondness for the imperfect - imperfection is what makes us human, and I want to celebrate the best parts of being human. When I began my abstract art practice, I was working in collage and mixed media, but transitioned to mostly acrylic painting because I like having full control over my colors and materials. So now I call myself a painter, although you’ll still sometimes see some collage elements worked into my paintings. Since 2007, I’ve been painting in my tiny studio in the Mission Bernal neighborhood of San Francisco. I travel as often as I possibly can, and study a few foreign languages so I am more comfortable at my destinations. In my free time, I crochet fancy lace, collect loud vintage neckties, and experiment with crazy hair colors.
