'Study of Roses' explores the concept of still-life in motion of an object often in a state of decay yet beautiful. The unevenly washed canvas foundation provides a contrast to the smooth streaks of the rose plant in the vase, adding energy to the traditionally 'classical' composition. The piece i...

Contact us.Born and raised in London, Leon Farrell is a contemporary oil painter whose practice sits at the intersection of stillness and velocity. Now based in West London, with a studio in Wimbledon, Farrell works primarily with traditional still-life motifs such as floral arrangements, fruit bowls, and landscapes, only to disrupt them through gesture, movement, and blur.
Having completed an Art Foundation at Central Saint Martins in 2004 before studying Spatial Design at London College of Communication (UAL), Farrell’s visual language is informed as much by composition and structure as it is by atmosphere and emotion. After more than a decade working within the entertainment industry while painting in parallel, he has since committed to his practice full time.
Central to Farrell’s work is an enduring preoccupation with time, its fragility, its speed, and the illusion of permanence. His signature approach begins with recognisable, almost classical compositions, which are then smeared, dragged, and disrupted across the canvas. This motion-blur aesthetic challenges the notion of “still life” itself, proposing that nothing is ever truly static, that life is experienced in motion, and remembered as a fleeting impression rather than a fixed image.
Raised in a working class household, Farrell was encouraged early in his artistic pursuits, studying oil painting from the age of thirteen under the guidance of a family friend. That early exposure to the medium fostered a lifelong affinity for oil paint, alongside parallel influences from fashion and music. These cultural references continue to inform his work today, often extending beyond the canvas through curated playlists that respond to the mood and rhythm of individual pieces.
Farrell’s paintings operate as quiet meditations on impermanence. Familiar forms are rendered unstable, moments are stretched and smeared, inviting the viewer to slow down and consider what it means to see, to remember, and to exist in constant motion.
