About The Artwork
A portrait of John Macarthur, not a desired portrait but one that depicts the man that took advantage of the early British settlement, stole land and intimidated and bullied his way to wealth. Macarthur was responsible for bring some of the royal flocks to Australia to begin his empire. In the painting he holds a masquerade style mask in the shape of a sheep. The false show of becoming someone your not, the performance element of masquerade and its links with colonialism fit the man.
