About The Artwork

Java (Factories)
Found Kretek (Cigarette) Wrappers, Acrylic, Gesso, UV Varnish, on Panel
48 x 48 x .75 in. 2010 In Black Satin Wood Float Frame, 1/2" gap, 1/4" frame Total size : 49.25 x 49.25 x 1.5 in I gathered discarded clove cigarette (kretek) box wrappers in Java, Indonesia, in 2008, collaged them on to panel and painted upside down 'drips' with acrylic paint. These can represent an abstract version of factories. A matte UV varnish was applied, giving the sheen of the re-purposed cigarette papers a satin feel, yet they still reflect well. One can see all of the beautiful and interesting patterns of the manufacturing embossing in the different cigarette papers. These disposable mass produced items are transformed into a precious silver and gold collectible. A remark on manufacturing, ephemera, and value. I have been traveling to Asia since 2005. During these trips, I gathered audio recordings of environments and folk music, as well as making drawings, photographs, and videos. These gatherings culminated in a series of audio compositional pieces, and an ongoing body of paintings, which were initiated in 2008. I am curious and enjoy gathering and sharing what I find interesting with others, and prefer to see my life’s creative output as merely manifestations made on a path. My painting process includes the layering and alteration of designs & colors (which were seen during these travels), combining traditional, contemporary, and commercial imagery with the occasional reproduction of a sourced drawing or photo. They are combinations, altered appropriative collages, improvisations. Embodied also is my fascination with the romantic view of tropical regions and their beauty, and the mystical practices and energies which occur in these places. I allow for an open ended-ness in the result of my paintings. They are made in a spontaneous manner, worked to compositionally resolve, but also to allow for unplanned results. Appreciation for the unique mental spaces created by experimental composition and improvised music informs my visual work. The head form in this series is intended to represent our connection with the physical plane…the body in which we inhabit, our inner being; the ego, outer and inner self. The possible idea that the being and self are merely constructs which do not exist, our physical being a portal and part of the cosmic, the concept that there is no “I”. If perhaps our connection to reality, and for that matter reality itself, is created by our language; then maybe if one believes or accepts something new; it does already it exist, and it has been discovered. www.jessepaulmiller.com
