This painting is very much inspired by the brooding atmosphere of the Gairloch Peninsula in the North West Highlands, which I used to visit regularly as a child and still return. It was from here that the Arctic convoys gathered and then set sail from there to the Baltic in WW2 and along this coast, that nuclear submarines would stalk (and still do) the seas during the height of the Cold War. One can see the influence of Magritte in the surreal juxtaposition of land and submarine, and of Casper David Friedrich, in the depiction of vast, wild open space and of human minutness and isolation within that. There is an awesome and mortal power to the submarine too, as it rears up from the heather. In the end though, nature over powers all man's edifices. Already it seems to have begun to overrun the vessel, which lies mysteriously stranded, a helpless yet strangely beautiful relic on the open moor.

United Kingdom
Originally born in the Highlands of Scotland, I spent my childhood between there and Perthshire. The influence of the the North West runs particularly strongly in my paintings and also serves as a backdrop for many site specific 3 D work too. Originally my training was in sculpture and I spent the earlier part of my career Working on a commission and Residency Basis In The Public Art Field. Wood was my preferred medium for a number of years, particularly carving on a large scale before I diversified into painting, photography, installation and laterally bronze casting. There is a natural interplay of all these disciplines with each one informing the other. From 1999 to 2016, I worked as a Part - time Tutor at Edinburgh College of Art, leaving that position to concentrate more exclusively on my own free lance pursuits, combined with more extensive travel.
