About The Artwork

I'm starting a new painting series inspired by Hungarian folklore motifs. In the Hungarian-speaking region, St. Lucy’s Day, December 13, is considered ominous and linked to evil forces. To protect themselves from witches, they took various precautions. They rubbed garlic on animals’ heads, drew crosses on barn doors, scattered ashes in front of gates, ate garlic-infused bread before bedtime to repel evil spirits, and hidden brooms to prevent witches from riding them. Boys would dress up as ghosts and visit houses. They shared rhymes and predictions about next year’s harvest, livestock health, or even long-awaited marriages. In return, they expected gifts for their prophecies.
