To paint this artwork, I used a detail of a Fayum portrait. The painter is anonymous and the portrait is currently exhibited in the Bristish Museum in London. The fayum portraits date to the Imperial Roman era, ( 1st century AD) they are the only large body of art from that tradition to have survived. Two cracks split the panel from top to bottom through the eyes.
This detail leaves aside all elements considering jewelry, hairstyle or clothing. I surrounded the face with geometric diamond-shape elements, each of them figuring a detail of our times. Old and new leads to reflections about current topics such as woman’s conditions through the ages, fashion, equality between men and women, seduction etc. Especially as it evoques a cover magazine. The whole is combined aesthetically with a green malachite color that was found in the ancient Egypt as a naturel mineral pigment and enhanced by golden dots.
Varnished (anti UV). Ready to hang.
