This is a view I was surprised to see, but often do see, on Phillip Island, in Victoria, Australia: a butterfly on an erratic flight against the backdrop of the beautiful sea, and weather. This is the Marbled Xenica, or Geitoneura klugii. I love that these insects are so strong, while being the flimsiest things in some ways! This painting also represents my complete joy as I walk this route along the sea shore; the light and weather change so much, and change the landscape they illuminate, so much.
This is painted with artist's high quality oil paint on a canvas-covered board - see pictures, it is framed in a strong, slim profile box frame which houses the board in a robust support, the frame is black with some of the wood grain visible.

I have always made art in various ways, and earlier in my art career I focused on modern sculpture, often made with soft materials. One of the drawbacks of sculpture is that the use of colour is complicated, but now I love to use interesting colour in my painting, whether to render a life-like reproduction of a person, insect, plant or landscape, or to make a bold statement in my "message" pieces. I love the quality of the ancient medium of paint, both oils and watercolours. I also love to observe and draw the world around me.. there's so much to see, and point out!
