Mathilda Painting

The title is a woman’s first name: Mathilda. This painted figure has a name, she is personified. A position against the usual objectivation and reification of women bodies, specifically the nudes in art History. Although she appears from three-quarters backs, nothing is shown of her nudity. The emphasis is therefore on this hand and on the face, the most expressive and personal parts of the body. The features are fine but proud, almost masculine : the hand is not small and delicate but ambiguous and without artifice, less classic than current. The precious, fierce beauty of the character is enhanced by the use of golden paint. Gold adorns the woman with its brilliance and dresses her with a symbolism combined with projections related to the idea of the naked woman: preciousness, rarity, desire, beauty.
