This portrait was painted after an impression of a young woman I saw at the Huntington Gardens in San Marino, California, USA. She was wearing white and to me seemed to be something of an ideal of beauty. I made some sketches and painted her from memory after returning to my studio, (at that time in Pasadena, Los Angeles). The ethereal beauty of the girl prompted me to call the painting Maya, since I could not ask her to sit and it was based on memory and inspiration of a stillness and meditative quality. In some ways, I had not expected this painting to come so much to life as it did. Maya has been a watchful presence in my studio over a number of years, often admired by people who have commissioned portraits. The painting has an innate simplicity. I added no textural history since I did not know the life story or circumstances of the woman beyond a glance in the Huntington.
