About The Artwork

Is there a difference between ‘The Nude’ and ‘The Naked’ or are these descriptions interchangeable? Perhaps the word ‘naked’ implies vulnerability greater than the word ‘nude’? ‘Nude’ adds decorum to ‘being naked’, ignoring society’s demands for modesty, for clothing, as the requisite to being civilized, a way of differentiating man from other animals and the civilized from the savage. ‘Naked’ has other connotations, an implication when applied to the human body of ‘shame’, as applied to ‘Eve’ when she succumbed to temptation! Whereas used otherwise, for instance in the phrase ‘the naked truth’ it indicates ‘factual reality’. The ‘Naked’ series is a demonstration of this, the attempt to cover-up what ‘the Nude’ is oblivious to any suggestion of impropriety. Added to that, the title ‘Naked’ as opposed to ‘The Nude’ is indicative of Society’s implied differentiation, identified perception of the same subject – the human body.

I am an architect and a contemporary fine artist living and working in Hampshire. Born in Nairobi, I graduated as an architect from Nottingham University, worked extensively both in Kenya and in England before establishing my own architectural practice, ‘Rita Sennik Architects’ at the turn of the century. In 2011, I enrolled at Southampton University to pursue my lifelong passion for painting. A recent Fine Art graduate from the Winchester School of Art, I am developing my practice as a painter and a sculptor. My practice explores the emotional dynamics of being a woman, engaging the female form and face to deconstruct established precepts of the nude and portraiture. Using the frame of the gallery, the history of painting, celebrating Modernism, my work realigns itself through process and the materiality of the medium within the context of post-modernism.
