For this particular series, I went back to working with "frames" made of wood or cardboard. I placed the frame on the paper and work inside it with very dynamic movements. I used pipette bottles filled with paint. The goal was to work fast in a contained space so the result would show the energy of the act of painting. There is also a lot of "alchemy" happening between the colors, depending on the fluidity and the layering. Was is particularly challenging and interesting is the fact that those paintings cannot be worked for a long time as they would lose their freshness and spontaneity. So this is not the place for correction and regret. As the performer, I nee to be right the first time. The attentive viewer will capture my intention.

My work is about painting itself, as a powerful medium. As stated by McLuhan, “the medium IS the message” and it is the focus of my research. I constantly ask myself what else can be done, what new problem can be solved. For example, what will happen if I pour very liquid paint on a thick layer of fresh paint? Will it hold? Will it create innovative textures and more space on the canvas? Or let’s remove the paint right after I put it on, and see what kind of mark it leaves on the surface and how I can build on it. I use art to answer those questions, always pushing the medium further, to places I did not go before. I almost feel like an alchemist in my studio. I yearn to reinvent myself with each painting. My work examines the tensions between chaos and order, it explores how turmoil can generate harmony if it is carefully channeled. This is a dilemma that I also observe in society and humanity as we are constantly leaning towards one or the other. Like life itself, my painting is in perpetual movement, always modified by the mere act of painting, where time becomes an instrument, an ally and not an enemy. I am very much interested in the effect that my work has on people. Each painting is an extension of me and a direct way to reach people. Like a lightbulb, it creates an environment for the viewers just by being there. It is a window, a passage to another space and time and also a mirror for the viewers as the painting allows them to look into themselves. I am originally from France and in my formative years I was influenced by different movements such as Lyrical abstraction or Tachism and Art Informal, particularly because of the place they leave to intuition and non-premeditation. I am continually developing my own style using what I call pictorial free association (for example, one shape, one specific color calls for another specific shape and color). I also do a lot of “paint-drawings”, using nozzles bottles filled with tempera paint as pens. This give a very spontaneous and originality to the drawing gesture. My subjects vary greatly, from a study of a Giotto’s fresco to a Native American Kachina, because these are supports for my exploration of the medium. Although I am always very much connected to the subject I choose, the main focus remains the medium and how I can improve its efficacy at relating to the viewers. To me art is a personal quest, a spiritual one and it is also a path to join with fellow humans.
