About The Artwork

Page 37 was inspired by an idea for a science fiction fantasy story that I had back in 1993. The image appears to be an alien star map that just evolved out of my head as I painted. I did recall that I had recently watched "Forbidden Planet" and wondered if their maps looked like this one, but the whole inspiration was spontaneous, almost as if I were channeling this idea. This piece has always been one of my favorites. I've shown it many times and am always asked the most interesting and unusual questions, like: Where did you get that? What language is that? What does it say? What does it mean? Do you have other pages from the handbook? And my favorite question was, "Did you meet an alien?" It does draw you in and those kind of questions will occur to the viewer, but it is a watercolor painting of a science fiction fantasy. The image is painted on 300lb. Arches cold press paper and is mounted to a wood stretcher board frame. When framed, the painting will float 1/2 inch above the back mat. Most interestingly, I wrote and illustrated the story twenty-one years later in 2014, and published both an ebook and a paperback that are available on Amazon.

My passion is painting. I draw and sketch daily but have a continuous fascination watching a face come alive as I paint, or paint believable reflections. I want my work to catch the viewer's eye and create an emotional connection. I was born in North Dakota and grew up in the Pacific Northwest, Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington. I began drawing when I was about five years old. I can remember how fascinated I was with fingerpaints and how the colors blended as I smeared my hands through the greasy paints.
