About The Artwork
This painting was inspired by the zodiac sign Taurus whose ruling element is Earth, ruling planet is Venus and is characterized by a stubborn yet dreamy sense of practicality. The colors are met to represent the earthy tones that are associated with the grounded Taurus personality. The planet Venus is representative of sensuality and romance which is shown through the open neckline and voluminous lips. I chose to call her Persistence rather than stubborn because of the negative connotation that can be associated with the word stubborn at times. She is not stubborn in a turn-a-blind eye type of way, but is persistent and determined through her serious expression and strong black abstraction coming from her mind. I hope viewers will see that femininity and sensuality can exist with grounded strength simultaneously; one does not negate the other. This painting is made up of mostly acrylic with a water color base and finished with a satin varnish for protection and clarity.

My art journey started fairly recently when I started pursuing an education and career as a mental health therapist, particularly in trauma treatment. While it is incredibly rewarding and sacred to be able to hold space for people as they share and come to terms with the most vulnerable parts of themselves, it is very heavy. Art and painting portraits has become my way of coping with this unique role that my job puts me in. I stare at people's faces all day and watch as they go through a range of emotions, so painting faces is one of my ways of releasing the heaviness of other's emotions while expressing my own.
