This is a very free-associative piece which has fragments of some b/w images I took and printed many years ago. I suppose it's spontaneity is closest to a dada collage. They images are now without context though they are identifiable: the ornate edge of a pool table, an open door. They work as pedestals or as parentheses for the central shape. The spiral appears in many spiritual art representations and is a common meditative pathway. In this case it is a free form shape done in blue also reminiscent the water in a swimming pool. In any case, there is whimsey & mystery in this piece as it is really non-objective -- the photo fragments are recognizable but have become odd design elements.

Throughout most of my visual arts practice I've been concerned with Image and Text experimentation using photography and digital media and have lectured, exhibited and taught in this realm. Painting has been something I've done in the background for the past 25 years and now I find myself primarily working with this medium. Starting with a blank canvas is startlingly different from my approach to creating image/text narratives. Whatever one does with a photographic image, there is a grounding to it and one can build on this representation. I always had an inkling of the style and content I wanted to produce. It is a different challenge with abstract painting to arrive at something which satisfies my visual goals, personal rules and aesthetics -- as unspoken as they may (initially) be. I find myself working through unfamiliar territory ending up with both successes and failures. My abstractions do tend to touch base with landscape, architecture, still life and the idea of home. ----------------------------------------------------- note: I will also be posting photo-based pieces, (diptychs, sequences with text). These pieces were exhibited mostly in the 1980's though early 2000s and many are within editions owned by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art among other collections.
