About The Artwork

Historical Landscapes Through my paintings Essling, Douaumont, Kokura, I’ve tried to approach the theme of the increasing dehumanisation of the world through its conflicts. Ambivalent evocation of main historical events from which it is not clear of the picture represents our times or the time when the event took place. • Douaumont : intentionally poorly documented evocation of the battlefield of Verdun. • Essling : Landscape showing the Donau river where one of the first Napoleonic wars took place. 50.000 casualties in 30 hours of fight, no winner. • Rust in Peace – Der Schlaf der Österreichischen Kriegsmarine : surrealistic evocation of stranded battleships on Austrian hills to denounce the vain resurgence of nationalism. • Kokura : aerial view of the city of Korkura which was targeted to get the second atom bomb, but was protected by a cloud.

Denis van Baren is a French-Dutrch artist born in Paris on the 11th of September 1968. He first trained as an architect and specialized in the preservation and restoration the architectural heritage. He practiced this activity on the highest level in Brussels for two decades. Since 2011, he devotes himself exclusively to his painting. van Baren draws since his early childhood, and first developed his skills in the watercolour technique. This has a considerable influence on his actual acrylic paintings, especially in the balance between light and shade. His architectural training as well as important personal research contributes to a very original representation of space and his experience to conserve the artistic heritage also confers to his work a particular philosophical dimension where time and memory play a central role. Through different series, he approaches the theme of memory.
