About The Artwork

In 'Steel,' the artist weaves an intricate tapestry of symbols and imagery, fashioning an enigmatic tableau that invites myriad interpretations. Within the backdrop, a modestly rendered umbrella resides in close proximity to a meticulously detailed lemon, forming a striking juxtaposition of divergent aesthetics, endowing the composition with a rich diversity of form. Throughout this enigmatic canvas, a menacing thorn weaves its sinuous path, deftly uniting these disparate elements, infusing the piece with a palpable sense of foreboding. The tether between these elements is cemented by the presence of the word 'glue,' slightly obscured by the thorn's presence, compelling the viewer to scrutinize the intricate web of connections within the artwork.

Tom engages with an eclectic range of images taken from the everyday, books, art history, and television. By funnelling a broad range of source material onto the canvas, the work oozes ambiguity. Although Tom is extremely selective with his choice of word and image, he combines them in such a way to blur any apparent meaning, allowing for a unique and individual voyage into the deep void created by the multitude of layers of paint and newspaper on the canvas. Tom’s work orbits around anti-capitalist themes as his bombastic brush strokes become an expression of detest towards powers of corruption. Tom’s work is a protest against the spiritually depraved world we live in and aims to sustain and invigorate the culture of art he is so infatuated by. Tom is a London-based artist who is a graduate from the University of Brighton and is currently studying a masters at UAL: Camberwell.
