About The Artwork

Original watercolour and ink. Ade as a pair of paintings that sit side by side - 'Take a chance' and 'I'll be there'. Can be purchased as a pair of separately. Ink line begins the painting and watercolour is added to create depth and complete the composition. The painting is worked into with pencil, pen and pastels. The pastel melts away to create a deep pigment and leaves a texture on the surface. The painting is on thick paper (550gsm) and unframed. There is a good border before and a torn edge to the paper. Unframed. Here is some background to this body of work: I took a dive a deep dive. The salt and the sand are blown into my studio with the sound of the waves. I sea swim and paint the experience. The feeling of immersion, the physical movement and the sensations of the water. The waves and the colours of the water, the sea glimpses as I swim and float. I love the movement of watercolour, its tactile luscious flows. I enjoy how transient and immediate it is and how as much as I can control it there is an element of going with the flow and adapting in the moment. I enjoy working back into the water using pencil and pens to drag and manipulate the pigment. I use chalks and pastels to add depth and love how they melt into the water to make a thick paint. I work freely and expressively and in the moment. The pieces are often influenced by the weather at the time and the seasons and light levels when I am working. I also make artworks in porcelain ceramic. My work on paper leads directly into these artworks. I find working with watercolour a fantastic companion to the precise and lengthly processes involved in my ceramic work.

I'm a designer-maker of illuminated artworks and lighting. I fell in love with porcelain and the beautiful diffused light it gives. Watercolour gives me an immediacy and fluidity that is not possible in porcelain. I can work freely in paint and it allows me to express my ideas before I bring them into the porcelain. Watercolour and paint have become an integral part of my practice and indeed important work of its own.
