About The Artwork

I already had this picture in my head while I was painting the flamingo. I wanted to paint a puffin because of their striking colours and initially I imagined him sitting on a cliff with a stormy sea and that is what I painted, but then I was sitting in bed one night staring at him for ages and I imagined him tucked away safe in a little cave with the storm raging outside. About that time a lovely photo was posted to me from Nature Lovers on Facebook of some tiny ferns and mushrooms and I thought it would be lovely to incorporate some ferns dangling from the mouth of the cave with moss and some mushrooms growing in the damp atmosphere. My son is fascinated with snail shells at the moment and keeps bringing in empty shells from the garden, particularly the yellow and brown one and to finish off the top corner I painted a snail peeping out to see if the storm had passed. I am member of the National Trust and in their autumn magazine there was a word Burra, meaning: a sheltered spot out of the wind, and I thought 'perfect!' He is painted on a 9 x 12 x 1.29 inch canvas in acrylics. The ocean is painted in silver with a blue wash and the puffin, snail and cave is highlighted with fluorescent colours so again he comes alive under a light! For me he represents home, sanctuary, safe from the world outside.

I have had no formal training and therefore my art is purely my perception and interpretation of what I see with my eyes and also in my imagination. I am inspired by the beauty and majesty of nature and the child within me is inspired by the fantasy world which is why apart from animals and flowers, I also love to paint whimsical characters and sometimes the two cross over. I usually photograph a creature in a cage or zoo and then I paint them in a beautiful ideal world. By doing this I paint what I want to see, i.e. free and surrounded by safety and beauty, not the reality. A world I love to live in. I usually see something in my every day life that suddenly gives me an idea. Then through visualisation I am able to see in my mind what the painting will look like. As the painting progresses, other ideas may come to me, but usually the image I see at first in my head is the one that appears on the canvas. I have used oils, Caran D'Ache pencils, charcoals and watercolours in the past. But now my favourite medium is acrylics on canvas.
