The oath of King Menelaus. After the abduction of beautiful Elena by Paris, her distraught husband Menelaus, King of Sparta, vowed to return her at all costs , destroying Troy and killing all its inhabitans. This was the beginning of the long , grueling Trojan war, the sad end of which was predicted by the prophetess Cassandra. I drew her terracotta Hellinistic head in the right part of my work. On the left is the characteristic gesture of Menelaus' oath-offering on a dagger. In the center of the work is a cow's skull and a fragment of ancient Greek relief depicting scene from Trojan life . They convey the atmosphere of peace and kindness of this ancient city. The Crescent moon above Cassandra's head emphasizes that it was during the moon that she fell into clairvoyance.

About The Artwork
