This painting was inspired by visits to the Acropolis in Athens and thoughts about time and timelessness and the ancient city of Alexandria. At one point, I called the painting Old Alexandria. At the Acropolis, I was struck by the movement of the sunlight on fallen marble stones, which were lying among grasses and flowers. It was warm, with a mild breeze. It occurred to me that the poppies and the light were much as they would have been at the time of Socrates, Plato, Aristotle or Alexander the Great. The architecture was in ruins but it continued to radiate a presence that imbued the place with a link to the timeless. The painting was in many ways a daydream about the ephemeral experience of a summer day contemplating timelessness. All the paints were handmade, with pigment and poppy oil. Apart from the poppies, the marks were spontaneous, coming entirely out of the light and colour. Occasionally I left some raw pigment in an unformed state, like a tracing of things that have been or could be.
