About The Artwork

To remember Apollonia in the summer of 2020 is to remember that the future was uncertain. The people were divided by fear of the Corona pandemic and conflicting political directives. Still, there was hope that every man would prosper under his own vine and fig tree. To Remember Apollonia is to remember the remnants of a destroyed crusader castle on the sea cliff by the Israeli town of Herzliya. Part of the archeological site is a V-shaped valley, where a bridge once connected a crusader town and citadel. The artist used the cleft between the sides to allude to the opposing social and political schisms of Israel in summer 2020. The grape vines and fig trees, symbols of peaceful co-existence, seem to frame imaginary players in a game of chess, but there can be no winners in a game with only one set of chessmen. On the left panel, the Biblical promise of peace and prosperity appears to be written in stone. Apollonia reminded me of past, present, future promises. This triptych is created with Encaustic paint that I make in my studio. It employs techniques of fusing wax layers. The sea is fused, allowing the layers to run together. The grapevines and realistic objects are carved from wax that flowed into individually cut stencils. Other details use computer printouts of photogaphs on organza or hand-made paper. If one looks at pictures of Apollonia facing the sea on the internet, it is possible to imagine faces in the boulders that remain strewn on the edge of the precipice.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

Art is a passion, which I steadfastly develop in my own way, getting inspiration from fragments of poetry, photographs or stories, rather than from drawings or paintings of other artists. Dr. Dalia Hakker-Orion, curator of my solo exhibition in Tel Aviv wrote: “She doesn’t paint according to instructions or styles, but evolves at her own pace, creating original paintings manifesting passages connecting different realities.” My story stretches from my childhood home in Southern California to the Sea of Galilee in Israel. My dual citizenship has strongly influenced my perspectives. From multiple traditions, art emerges as the visual expression of movement and multi-layered ideas. I am currently working with encaustic paint that I make in my studio. My work incorporates a variety of materials: oil, acrylic, pastel, pencil sketches, and found objects.
