About The Artwork

This work explores an interest in surrealism and the suggestion of a psychological space. Both Quell 1 and Quell 2 thematically reference memory and place, as a depiction of a child’s inward feelings of restraint and uncertainty. It is at this place when past experiences, grounded on a singular perspective, are re-lived through memory. These feelings are intensified with the knowledge that memory cannot be altered. In this way, the human figure for this work, is used as a catalyst to express the loss of control through memory. As a child of 10 years, I suffered a serious hip fracture which resulted in months of hospitalization, painful physical therapy and the proceeding years of social and educational challenges. The ideology of a healthy and fun childhood can be quickly altered by one tragic event which often affects the individual in more ways than one realizes.I chose to re-visit this time period of my childhood to serve as a testimony to those with less-than-perfect memories of their youth, but also to reference our reliance on memory. I'm sure we have all been in a situation where we recount a past memory, only to discover that our perception was incorrect. It is this realization that even if the memory was not correct, does it matter? Is it more about the feeling coming from the individual, than about accuracy of events?

My painting practice has been split into two distinctly different processes: Firstly, traditional painting on canvas displayed on the wall; and secondly, the creation of hybrid painting which focuses on process and the materiality of acrylic/latex paint. The latter uses steel mesh rather than canvas and is formed into large scale 3-d floor paintings. The former process, traditional painting on canvas, is my current practice. My current research involves collecting personal interviews from friends and family about their memories of childhood, coupled with tangible materials such as photographs, postcards, letters, diaries, maps, vintage objects etc. My research is then collated to construct a contextual framework, a narrative that will become a series of painted works. The work is testimony to preservation and/or deterioration of memory through time, the impact of trauma, and the surrounding environment. My research has revealed a drastic polarity between my own memories of a past event, and that of others who experienced the same event. This series of figurative paintings, which is still work in progress, infers a state of suspension; a presence that is captured within a memory, or the perception of what that memory was. My first series of paintings called Quell 1 and Quell 2, demonstrates the beginning of my exploration into the theme of memory, and the compositional challenges that are presented to me as a contemporary painter.
