About The Artwork

Depicts Houstonia/Bluets & Vitis vulpina/Wild Grape with the spores of Dryad’s Saddle/Polyporous Squamosus. Bluets flower briefly in mid-spring, carpeting the new grass with tiny purple four-petaled flowers. Some stretch as tall as 6 inches, but most stay close to the ground. I love their hopeful arrival; even if only for a few weeks, they always show up. I quickly forget about bluets when larger, showier flowers emerge. The departure of bluets means summer is here. I created this bluet series as a reminder that spring returns every year. Part of the New Herbarium series, my interpretation of the practice of preserving and presenting plants. Inspiration for this series came from Emily Dickinson’s Herbarium.

b. 1961, Norwalk, CT. Lives and works in western Massachusetts Madge Evers is an educator, gardener, and visual artist whose work celebrates regeneration and transformation. She has been paying close attention to signs of fungi since 2015, when she began making mushroom spore print art. Referencing photosynthesis and the ancient collaboration in mycorrhiza, her practice involves foraging for mushrooms and plants, and sometimes includes the cyanotype process and paint. Evers was a teacher in Rhode Island and Massachusetts public schools for 25 years and now works as a full-time artist. She continues to connect with students by teaching cyanotype workshops to people of all ages.
