This work captures the "liminal boundary" where an everyday structure intersects with the colors of the natural world. I framed this close-up of a park railing under a clear, azure sky. The metallic silver of the railing appears to melt into the expanse of the vibrant blue, representing an abstract...

My work primarily focuses on Japanese cityscapes and architectural structures. I aim to transcend mere documentation by extracting serenity, geometry, and the passage of time that lies hidden within these artificial environments.
My journey into photography began with the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, during my second year of university. My mother’s hometown, Kesennuma, suffered devastating damage, transforming into a place completely unrecognizable from the one we knew.
Witnessing this profound change firsthand, I felt an urgent need to use my own hands to document this altered landscape and the ensuing path to recovery, determined to pass this memory on to future generations. The reality of the disaster area captured in those photos was compiled into a book. Through this process, I became deeply captivated by the emotional power and expressive capability of photography, realizing it was more than just a tool for record-keeping. Since then, creating art has been my calling.
Railroad tracks, skyscraper walls, closed shutters, and deserted alleyways—these are often overlooked scenes in daily life. Leveraging the sensitivity to light and shadow gained from documenting the disaster, I seek to abstract these artificial elements to the maximum extent, transforming them into minimalist art defined by structural beauty.
I am strongly drawn to “liminal spaces”—those isolated boundaries within the urban noise. Through strong contrasts of light and shadow, and complex patterns, I express the city’s duality (stillness and movement, new and old) and the sense of solitary introspection of the people living within it. My photography intends to pause the viewer, reconstructing the familiar urban reality, and allowing them to perceive the poetic tension and the weight of memory that resides within it.
