Mother Photograph

"Mother" is the first of 13 black and white photos from the newest photo series of Anna Daki. The photo series present thirteen female models from Odessa, a city in the southern Ukraine which has recently become a center of dramatic, political events. The women pictured in this series are all born and raised in Ukraine but have different religious and cultural backgrounds. Anna Daki and her producer Sheina Miretskaya who both originate from Odessa, Ukraine, as well assembled women of Arabic, Asian, Afro-American, Jewish and Christian origin together who are unified by their idea to support their birth country. These photo series reveals a contrasting image of the country which is presented in the media as being violent and nationalistic against its minorities. Photographer Anna Daki and the Producer Sheina Miretskaya use the same tool, photography, which was used by media to create a negative image of Ukraine in the press, to demonstrate a different and unexpected vision of their homeland. By using a female figure as a symbol for Ukraine, Anna Daki and Sheina Miretskaya portray Ukraine as a tolerant and open-minded country where people regardless of their cultural, religious and ethnic backgrounds can co-exist peacefully and are able to unite in the fight for their independence and freedom. 80x60 cm fine art print, matt, on Alu Dibond Aluminium 20% of all sales will be donated to the Odessa Charity Foundation "Future" Children's rehabilitation Centre.
