This form approaches one of the technical limits of the material. Structural strength plays a large role in these sculptures and working with the wood in this way allows for very natural forms to emerge—forms which I think respect the character of the wood and which I hope honour the tree by finding expressions within the plant material which celebrate its specific nature. Having developed a sense for working within these structural limitations I knew The Impenetrable Field No.1 would require special care when carving. When carving certain parts, one must not put certain stresses on certain other parts. Generally, the beginning to mid-late stages, while there is still a lot of wood thickness, is of no particular concern in this regard, but nearing the end, one must maintain focused care. As it stands in its final form, it is as strong and stable as it needs to be. In this particular piece, the main force to be avoided is squeezing or squishing from the two sides (again, unlikely to occur). The notion of "The Impenetrable Field" was one of the factors in the formation of this design. It would be a lengthy essay to attempt to explain what is meant but fortunately I wrote a poem at the time of inception which encapsulates the meaning. Basic Futility! One rests in Ironic glee— The unsought terminus* Is upon one As the pure stream Resumes once more Its unceasing readiness To flow and heal, Like Nature's movement In the birds, the trees, The wind, sky and sun— Rest knowing The Pursuits Are in vain, For the impenetrable field, The Love, is unending and always Here.
