Torus (Mathematics): 'A ring-shaped surface generated by rotating a circle about a coplanar line that does not intersect the circle'. The torus, more commonly recognised as a doughnut, is a symbol of infinity; its form consists of unbroken rings in two directions. A crystal accompanies the doughnut; constantly rotating to mirror the torus form. When you walk the streets you'll have no cares, If you walk the lines and not the squares, As you go through life make this your goal Watch the doughnut, not the hole.

The foundation of Broadley's practise is to invent mathematical based systems in order to quantify our surroundings. These systems vary in function but their ultimate aim is to convert our surroundings into numerical values; then into simple shapes and structures as a way of reducing and simplifying. The emphasis of this process is not on a final result or outcome but on the system itself. Broadley's sculptures represent his systems; drawing inspiration from Second World War and Cold War technology he creates fictional machines and objects in order to highlight the role of the system in his process. Using low-tech materials such as cardboard to achieve a 'home-made' aesthetic Broadley looks to bring his systems to life in physical form.
