About The Artwork
In this painting the dancer strikes a very expressive pose that reaches from the gesture of the body to the fingertips. The figure is outlined with dark brushstrokes and painted in patches of color that seem to merge with the background. The tutu is delicately painted with scumbled white and splashes of color. The expressiveness of the figure and the handling of paint is inspired by Degas. This is a dark-toned painting with complex and subtle shades of color throughout, dominated by a muted turquoise. It has a matte finish. This work ships framed in the frame shown in the photos. I hand-painted this wooden frame in an orange-gold color that makes a strong contrast with the muted turquoise in the painting. The color of the frame matches one area of reflected color on the left arm of the figure. The framed original includes attached hanging wire, ready to hang.

Currie is an American artist who has lived in the Northeastern US, California, Washington DC, and now lives and works in Michigan. His paintings explore line and color and often merge semi-realistic with modern and abstract approaches. He uses multiple layers of paint to create texture and richness of tone. He experiments with ways to combine aspects of drawing and painting, sometimes painting pure abstracts to loosen up or explore new combinations of colors and textures. Figure paintings are developed in the studio from photos taken on the street while traveling, sketches from memory, or from charcoal or pastel studies drawn in sessions with live models. Currie is a self-taught artist who has been drawing and painting since childhood. He draws and paints live models with groups of other artists in Michigan.
