About The Artwork

Inspired by the theories of Carl Jung, this painting features the shadow of a painter as if it were viewed from the other side of the canvas, we see only the soft shadow cast on the canvas itself, sharpened where the brush is pressed against it and framed by the stretcher bars themselves. Soft brushstrokes over thickly applied muted hues add to its thoughtful mood, but drawing back the viewer may notice the bold profile sketched out by the shadowy subject that hints of interior musings hidden behind a bold exterior. This painting is supplied in a black frame with gold on the front face and is fitted with cord and D-rings for hanging and will be delivered in a small crate. Please note the chip in the gold finish on the lower left of the frame.

Following on from her role as Roaming Sketch Artist for Wilderness Festival between 2014 and 2018, Hamley became the first official Artist in Residence for Jazz Live at the Crypt, an established jazz venue in South London and was recently selected as the Reserve Artist for the 2022 Sky Portrait Artist of the Year. Hamley's work has been selected for the ING Discerning Eye exhibition, the Lynn Painter-Stainer's Competition, the Dulwich Picture Gallery Open Exhibition and she is a Folio Society commissioned Illustrator. When working plein air Hamley uses medium that are easily transportable such as watercolour. The larger format paintings are executed in the studio with acrylics as they allow her to work quickly, add texture and create depth of colour with glazes and dry-brush techniques. Dali and Magritte made an impression on Hamley at an early age, also Rembrandt and Renoir, later Goya, Van Gogh, Gaugin, Turner, Duchamp, Magritte, Escher, Stanley Spencer, Hockney, Bacon and Frink, currently Bonnar, Seurat and Manet.
