Ruderer im Wind is an abstract expressionist work exploring movement, resistance, and persistence. Rather than depicting a figure, the composition captures the trace of action through dynamic vertical strokes and layered horizontal lines, suggesting tension between effort and opposing forces. Rea Schenk’s works move in an in-between. They play with what is depicted and with its reconstruction through process, and they resist the categories that usually order images – photograph or painting, digital or analogue, document or invention.
In a world that demands clarity, she deliberately focuses on the blurred, the unfinished and the dissolving. Blur is not a flaw in the system but a conscious act: the moment the diffuse is given space and the image stops being a mere document.
Her work touches on questions of perception, memory and identity. Reality appears not as a fixed state but as something fragile – a construct formed in the ongoing interplay of experience, projection, inner and outer images. The same holds for language: no system is stable, meanings keep shifting.
PHOTO CONSTRUCT and PHYSICAL CONSTRUCT offer a provisional order – one the works themselves constantly undermine. Fragments migrate from one into the other, are “digested” and return in a different form. Fractures are not hidden but become part of the form, as in kintsugi. The in-between itself becomes the structure.
Rea Schenk lives and works in Berlin.
