About The Artwork
Hope spring afresh in this conceptual portrait of Pope Frances. Carved in Carrara statuario bianco - white statuary marble from Carrara in Italy where much of the marble for religious works has been quarried since ancient times. The marble is significant as it references the history of the catholic church and the papacy. A flower bud is just emerging from the pope's mitre symbolising hope and new beginnings - not just for the Catholic church but for most of the world. The mitre is slightly distorted signifying change and perhaps reform. It site on a black granite base that is orderly and stepped symbolising the institution of the church.

John studied Architecture and then trained as a stonemason before gaining his tertiary qualifications. He is currently Head Teacher of a secondary senior college art faculty and enjoys a balance of teaching and making his own sculpture .He has been a sculptor for over thirty-five years and is represented in public and private collections. He works mainly with sandstone, marble, timber, bronze and combinations of these materials.
